I recently reviewed a local restaurant I love on GOOGLE rather than yelp. I see that google has it's own rating system to compete with Yelp and I think even though most people use yelp, the star ratings matter because we all use google search so often that I can't even fathom using a different search engine. I have often thought of creating maps of the neighborhood to publish or even print for tourists so they can check out the places I like. Similar to what Airbnb Hosts offer. So I signed up for the LOCAL GUIDE program: https://www.google.com/local/guides/ You get points for reviewing, adding other photos and correcting. Google is powerful and I believe they are going to collect this data with our without us. Since we are all local business owners I think creating maps and reviews for our fellow businesses is a great free opportunity to somehow influence the data cloud that is google.
