The Tribeca small business community is located in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The neighborhood’s name is a shortening of "Triangle Below Canal Street". The "triangle", or more accurately, a trapezoid, is bounded by Canal Street, West Street, Broadway, and Chambers or Vesey Streets. In the early 1970s, a couple of years after artists in SoHo legalized their live/work situation, artist and resident organizations in the area to the south sought to gain similar zoning status for their neighborhood. A group of artist/residents living directly south of Canal Street between Church Street and Broadway joined the effort. The Tribeca area was among the first residential neighborhoods developed in New York beyond the boundaries of the downtown area during colonial times, with residential development beginning in the late 18th century. By the mid-19th century, Tribeca’s commercial center had turned into a major small business community, with large numbers of store and loft buildings constructed along Broadway in the 1850s and 1860s. By the 1960s, Tribeca's industrial base was replaced by artists lofts, and many of the empty commercial spaces were turned into upscale small businesses. The former Tribeca small business community of the 19th and early 20th century was a center of the textile/cotton trade, and today, the Tribeca small business community is dominated by former industrial buildings that have been converted into residential buildings and lofts. By the early 21st century, Tribeca became one of Manhattan's most fashionable and desirable neighborhoods. As of the 2000 census, there were 10,395 people residing in Tribeca. Tribeca remains a hot-spot residences for young artists and their families, not to mention celebrities and other noteworthy names. High end salons and boutiques, family-friendly restaurants and brunch spots, gourmet food stores and really good shopping are the standouts in the Tribeca small business community. The small business community in the Tribeca neighborhood is notable for being home to the Tribeca Film Festival. The festival celebrates New York City as a major filmmaking center.
