The Rainier View small business community is located in the far southeastern corner of the city of Seattle, Washington. The Rainier View neighborhood is a part of a larger grouping of neighborhoods along Lake Washington in South Seattle. The region called Rainier Beach has two major thoroughfares, Rainier Avenue South and Renton Avenue South. In the 1870s, a trail where the main thoroughfare of Rainier Avenue South is located was the route to bring livestock into Seattle. An electric trolley line came to Rainier Valley in 1891, and then to the Columbia City neighborhood and to the city of Renton, in 1896. Residential development began in earnest in the late 19th century in the Rainier View neighborhood. A local small business owner built a park area, a pier, bath house, boat house and picnic facilities on Lake Washington for the Rainier Beach region to enjoy. A historic firehouse from 1914 still stands in the Rainier View community as a reminder of the past. The firehouse originally operated a single horse-drawn fire engine, and was built in a modified Tudor style. In the post World War II era, the Rainier View area became urban. Since the middle of the 20th century, an African-American population has resided in the vibrant community center. Today, over half of the population in the Rainier Beach region is African American, one of only two neighborhoods in Seattle, including the Central District, where the black population is a majority. In November of 2014, Rainier View and the surrounding Rainier Beach community became an important site of protests, when residents demanded more protections and equality in legal proceedings for the black community. Kubota Gardens is an oasis of green in Rainier View and the Rainier Beach Library serves the Rainier View community. King Donut, Maya’s Mexican Restaurant, and Hong Kong SeafoodSee are lovingly operated in the small business community by Mexican, Cambodian, Vietnamese and East African residents. Local business owners host an art walk in storefront across the entire Rainier Beach region and neighborhood coalitions work together to make sure that Rainier View is a safe and beautiful community is a safe and beautiful community for its residents and small business owners.
